Established at the end of the 16th cent. as a Zaporozhian Cossack winter settlement. In 1780 the settlement was known as the Sloboda Hryhorivka [no publs. in LC data base], and in 1785 it was renamed Novohryhorivka [no publs. in LC data base]. In 1806 the city received its permanent name of Verkhnʹodniprovsʹk.
