Wikipedia, 12 November 2013: Shropshire (Shropshire; alternatively, Salop; a county in the West Midlands region of England; a unitary authority (Shropshire Council) was created on 1 April 2009, taking over from the previous county council and 5 district councils, and covers most of the county; the borough of Telford and Wrekin has been a separate unitary authority since 1998 but continues to be included in the ceremonial county. The origin of the name "Shropshire" is the Old English "Scrobbesbyrigscīr" (literally Shrewsbury-shire). Salop is an old abbreviation for Shropshire; it is normally replaced by the more contemporary "Shrops" although Shropshire residents are still referred to as "Salopians." When a county council for the county was first established in 1889, it was called Salop County Council. Following the Local Government Act 1972, Salop became the official name of the county, but both the county and council were renamed as Shropshire 1 April 1980. The present day ceremonial county boundary is almost the same as the historic one.) Local Government Act 1972 (an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom that reformed local government in England and Wales on 1 April 1974; non-metropolitan counties included: Salop (Shropshire))
The London gazette, 11 March 1980: p. 3797 (at an extraordinary meeting of the Salop County Council on 1st March 1980, a resolution was approved changing the name of the county from Salop to Shropshire with effect from 1st April 1980)
Wikipedia, 4 November 2013: West Midlands (region) (the West Midlands is one of nine official regions of England at the first level of NUTS for statistical purposes; the official region contains the large conurbation that includes Birmingham and Wolverhampton, but also covers the predominantly rural shire counties of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire) Regions of England (In England, the region is the highest tier of sub-national division used by the central government. Between 1994 and 2011, nine regions had officially devolved functions within UK Government. While they no longer fulfil this role, they continue to be used for some administrative purposes. They define areas (constituencies) for the purposes of elections to the European Parliament. Eurostat also uses them to demarcate first level Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) regions ("NUTS 1 regions") within the European Union. The regions generally followed the boundaries of "standard regions" established in the 1940s)
