This mistake dates from the sixteenth century, when Leland in his Commentarii de scriptoribus Britannicis introduced his brief account of Bartholomaeus with this sentence: 'Bartholomaeus Glannovillanus ex noblissimo, ut ego colligo, genere Comitum Sudovolcarum eiusdem appellationis originem duxit' ... Leland, it appears, confused the author of the De proprietatibus rerum with a Bartholomaeus de Glanvilla of Suffolk, who died about 1360")

Before 1255 (if the probable identification is certain) he was elected minister of Bohemia, which included the custody of Poland ... In 1256 he was .. appointed papal legate north of the Carpathians ... and directed to preach the cross in Bohemia, Moravia, Poland, and Austria ... In 1262 ... Bartholomaeus was elected minister of Saxonia ... and returning to Magdeburg he remained in office until his death in 1272, holding nine provincial chapters")
