Wikiwant, TotalEnergies, viewed May 2, 2022 (TotalEnergies SE, formerly Total; founded in 1924 by Ernest Mercier under the name "Compagnie française des pétroles"; after the First World War France wanted to establish energy independence from Great Britain and the U.A. by creating a national petroleum company; French interests were represented to the TPC (Turkish Petroleum Company) by the Syndicat français d'études pétrolières in 1923; on 24 March 1924 a constitutive general asembly gave birth to the Compagnie française des pétroles; the CFP was created on 28 March 1924 when it received the actions of the TPC and the "Syndicat" gave way to it; in 1929 the CFP was introduced in the stock market; the CPF distributed petroleum that it refined under the brand "Total" launched 14 juillet 1954, associated with a logo using the three national colors; "Total" was used because it's short, has a meaning and pronunciation the same in many languages, and reflected an international ambition; "Total-Compagnie française de distribution" (Total-CFD, a subsidiary of the CFP) and Desmarais frères merged in 1965; the CFP which absorbed Desmarais held at that time almost 30% of the distribution market of petroleum in France; on 21 June 1985 the name of the company was changed to Total-Compagnie française des pétroles (Total CFP), then changed to Total 5 years later, on 26 June 1991; its headquarters is located since the 1980s in the business district of la Défense (Courbevoie, France))
