Found inIts Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va., a brief history, 1956 (estab. 1767 by Andrew Sprowle, merchant and shipbuilder as Gosport Shipyard; under British flag; at outbreak of Amer. Revol. Commonwealth of Virginia confiscated and operated shipyard for state of Virginia; in May 1779 British forces burned the shipyard; inactive until 1794 when yard was loaned to the U.S.; in 1798 U.S. Navy Dept. created and shipyard became known as Gosport Navy Yard and property purchased by U.S. from state of Va.; in 1861 yard evacuated and burned by U.S. forces and subsequently reoccupied by state of Va. (later transferred to C.S.A. Navy); in 1862 again reoccupied by U.S. Navy; in 1929 name changed to Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia; in 1945 name changed to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia)
