It was first mentioned in historical sources of the 12th cent. Until the 18th cent. it was part of Hungary, but at the end of the 18th cent. it was annexed by Austria-Hungary. On 03-23/1919 Soviet power was established in Svali︠a︡va, but in April of that same year the city was seized by Czechoslovakia. In 1939 the city was annexed by Hungary.
