Originally known as Poage Settlement or Poage's Landing, settled by the Poage family of Virginia. Became a producer of timber, coal, limestone and pig iron. Ashland Oil, the thirteenth largest petroleum refining company in the United States, was founded there in 1924. Named after the Henry Clay estate, Ashland, in Lexington, Ky.
