| Biography/History note | Hanuš Burger worked in Hamburg between 1931 and 1932, then returned to Czechoslovakia because of the political situation in Germany. He fled from Czechoslovakia in 1938 and came to the United States, where he taught at the Lee Strasberg Theater School in New York and made documentary films. In 1941 he joined the U.S. Armed Forces, and worked in the Propaganda and Psychological Warfare Division of the 12th Army. Burger was the director responsible for the U.S. propaganda radio station, Radio 1212. He wrote about that experience in the book, 1212 sendet. For some time after the war, he was the documentary film programmer at the United Nations in New York City, where he directed the Oscar winning documentary, First steps, in 1947. In 1950 he returned to Prague where he became the director of Prague children's television. In 1968, following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, he emigrated to Munich, where he continued to work in theater, film and television. In 1977 he wrote his autobiography, Der Frühling war es wert. |
