Wikipedia, September 9, 2015 (Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnamese: Thành phó̂ Hò̂ Chí Minh), formerly named and still also referred to as Saigon (Vietnamese: Sài Gòn; French: Saïgon), is the largest city in Vietnam; under the name Saigon, it was the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina and later of the independent republic of South Vietnam 1955-75. On 2 July 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding Gia Định Province and was officially renamed Ho Chi Minh City after Hò̂ Chí Minh (although the name Sài Gòn is still unofficially widely used))
Britannica online, September 9, 2015 (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnamese Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh, formerly (until 1976) Saigon, largest city in Vietnam. It was the capital of the French protectorate of Cochinchina (1862-1954) and of South Vietnam (1954-75))
Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City? Which name is more popular now?, via Vietnam online website, September 9, 2015 (The name Ho Chi Minh City officially became the name for Saigon in July, 1976)
Rodgers, G. Is it Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon? What name to use for Vietnam's largest city, via About travel website, September 9, 2015 (Saigon, or Sài Gòn in Vietnamese, was merged with the surrounding province in 1976 and renamed Ho Chi Minh City; while Ho Chi Minh City (often shortened to HCMC, HCM, or HCMc in writing) is the new official name of the city, Saigon is still used daily by many Vietnamese, particularly in the south; Southern Vietnamese people living in the suburbs of the city often refer to their area as part of Ho Chi Minh City, while Saigon is used in reference to the urban heart and areas around District 1. This is because the surrounding provinces were not a part of Saigon before the merger and name change in 1976)
