Oxford DNB online, 25 June 2019 (Paterson, William (1658-1719); banking projector, was born in April 1658 in Skipmyre, Dumfriesshire; Paterson's early life is obscure, though Sir John Clerk of Penicuik later stated that he had been 'bred in England from his infancy'; The first reliable record of his activities records his membership of the Merchant Taylors' Company on 16 November 1681; His lasting monument was the Bank of England; was thus among the first directors when it was chartered on 27 July 1694; eventually accompanied the first, ill-fated, Scottish voyage to Darien in July 1698; died in January 1719 (where is not known) and was buried in Sweetheart Abbey, Kirkcudbright)
