On March 12, 1958, Stokes collided with an opponent, fell hard, and hit his head on the floor. Despite being knocked out for 3 minutes, Stokes returned to play in that game. Three days later, he went into a coma and suffered paralysis from the neck down. Doctors determined the paralysis was caused by post-traumatic encephalopathy caused by the fall he had suffered in the Minneapolis game. In 1970, Maurice Stokes suffered a heart attack and died at the age of thirty-six. Maurice Stokes changed basketball, clearing the way for countless great big men and Black athletes.
