Bolʹsh. sov. ėnt︠s︡ikl., 3rd ed.: v. 23, p. 238 (Semipalatinsk, the center of Semipalatinskai︠a︡ oblastʹ, Kazakhstan. It was established in 1718 as a fortress and until 1782 was named Semipalatka [no publs. in LC data base]. Semipalatinsk was located in the Sibirskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡ from 1745 until 1796. In 1796 it was assigned to the Tomskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡ and since 1854 has been an oblast center. A Soviet government was established there on 02-16-1918, but the town was occupied by White Army forces during 1918-1919. From 1920-1928 Semipalatinsk was a guberniya center, and from 1928-1832 it served as a okrug center. In 1932 it was assigned to the Vostochno-Kazakhstanskai︠a︡ oblastʹ, and from 1939 it has been in the Semipalatinskai︠a︡ oblastʹ)
