Wikipedia, 11 September 2020 (Johann Heinrich Samuel Formey (French: Jean Henri Samuel Formey; 31 May 1711-7 March 1797); German churchman, educator, author, and journalist; son of immigrant French Huguenot family, preached, taught, and wrote in French; a founding member of Berlin Academy, wrote thousands of letters (including correspondence with Francesco Algarotti and Prosper Marchand), popularized scientific and philosophical ideas, and contributed to Diderot's Encyclopédie; born in Berlin, Brandenburg; in 1736 became pastor of French Protestant church in Berlin; in 1737 chosen professor of rhetoric in Collège Français there, and in 1739 professor of philosophy; pupils included Louis de Beausobre (to become philosopher and political economist of some standing in his own right); on reorganisation of Academy of Berlin in 1744, during Frederick the Great's reign, was named member, in 1748 its perpetual secretary; in 1750 appointed member of Royal Society; principal works: La belle Wolfienne (1741-1753), began as popularisation, for women, of Wolff's philosophy in form of philosophical romance, but by end of 4th volume, abandoned fiction for paraphrase and abridgement of Wolff's metaphysical works), Le Philosophe chrétien (1740), L'Émile chrétien (1764, intended as an answer to the Émile of Rousseau), Souvenirs d'un citoyen (Berlin, 1789); also published immense number of contemporary memoirs in the transactions of Berlin Academy)

Wikipedia, l'encyclopédie libre, 11 September 2020 (Johann Heinrich Samuel Formey (31 May 1711, Berlin-7 March 1797, Berlin); pastor and German man of letters; family of French Huguenot refugees originated from Dampierre-sur-Moivre; after became philosophy teacher in 1739, resigned position as pastor, but continued to preach; with organisation of Académie royale des sciences de Prusse in 1744, accepted positions of secretary of Classe de philosophie and conseiller privé; in 1748, was named sole and permanent secretary of Académie de Berlin; in 1781, became director of Classe de philosophie; in 1778, princess dowager of Württemberg chose him as secretary, after her death, the court of Mecklenburg-Schwerin named him as its agent; also different positions connected with the French colony [of Huguenots in Berlin], including director of Maison d'Orange, charity liaison (from 1747), then conseiller privé of Directoire supérieur (obtained 1772); invited by Frédéric II to establish plan of judicial reform to guide the redactors of Corpus juris federicianum or Codex juris fredericianus (French translation: Code Frédéric pour les États de Sa Majesté le roi de Prusse, 1750/1751); wrote a great deal in all disciplines, including politics; several works translated into German, Dutch, English, Italian, or Russian; founder or principal editor of periodical publications; also wrote Remarques de grammaire sur Racine, pour servir de suite à celles de l'abbé d'Olivet, avec des remarques détachées sur quelques autres écrivains du premier ordre (Berlin, 1766, in-12), published under pseudonym Yemrof (palindrome of his name))
