It was first mentioned in chronicles of the year 1151. Situated south of Kiev, it protected the capital of Kievan Rus from the steppe nomads. However, in 1223 it was destroyed by the Tatars [Mongols of the Golden Horde]; excavations were conducted there during 1960-1966; v. 4, p. 487 (Rzhyshchiv [Ržyščiv], a town on the Dnieper River in Kaharlyk raion, Kiev oblast. In medieval times Ivan-Horod [no publs. in LC data base] stood at the site. After its destruction by the Mongols in 1240, the site remained uninhabited for a long time. The new settlement of Rzhyshchiv is first mentioned in historical documents of 1506. The village belonged to the Kiev metropoly. After the Union of Lublin in 1569, it came under Polish rule. Its inhabitants supported the anti-Polish revolt during 1637-38. Rzhyshchiv became a company center in the Kaniv regiment. Revolts of 1664, 1750, and 1768 tried to throw off Polish rule.
