Ukr. rad. ent︠s︡ykl.: v. 4, p. 218 (Zastavna, a city in the Chernivet︠s︡ʹka oblastʹ. It was first mentioned in historical sources of 1589. From the beginning of the 16th cent. it was part of the Moldavian pricipality which was then ruled by Turkey. From 1774 until 1918 it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In Nov. 1918 Zastavna was seized by Romania where it remained until 06-28-1940 when as part of Southern Bukovina it was reunited with the Ukrainian SSR)
