He worked as assistant foreign policy editor for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He lectured on security management in the University of Lüneburg. He survived a poison gas attack in Iraq, a bout with cancer, and head injuries from a fall. He died of his fourth heart attack on January 13, 2017, one week before his 57 birthday)
