Born in Harpersfield, New York (Delaware County) on March 20, either 1821 or 1823. Died on July 18, 1886 in Stamford, New York. Received a commission as a midshipman in the Navy on February 10, 1838. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 1st New York Mounted Rifles and rose to the rank of sergeant before he was dishonorably discharged for drunkenness. Traveled extensively in the West. Lectured about temperance. Claimed he created the nickname "Buffalo Bill" for William F. Cody, whom he promoted. He also used the following pseudonyms: Captain Hal Decker [no pubs. in OCLC], Scout Jack Ford [no pubs. in OCLC], and Edward Minturn [no pubs. in OCLC]) Agnew, Jeremy.
