Wikipedia, viewed August 15, 2018: Ned Buntline (Edward Zane Carroll Judson Sr., dime novelist, known by his pseudonym Ned Buntline, was an American publisher, journalist, writer, and publicist. Born in Harpersfield, New York (Delaware County) on March 20, either 1821 or 1823. Died on July 18, 1886 in Stamford, New York. Received a commission as a midshipman in the Navy on February 10, 1838. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 1st New York Mounted Rifles and rose to the rank of sergeant before he was dishonorably discharged for drunkenness. Traveled extensively in the West. Lectured about temperance. Claimed he created the nickname "Buffalo Bill" for William F. Cody, whom he promoted. He also used the following pseudonyms: Captain Hal Decker [no pubs. in OCLC], Scout Jack Ford [no pubs. in OCLC], and Edward Minturn [no pubs. in OCLC])
Agnew, Jeremy. The creation of the cowboy hero, 2015: page 45 (Edward Zane Carroll Judson wrote under a variety of pseudonyms, such as Charlie Bowline [no pubs. in OCLC], Frank Clewline, and Jack Brace [no pubs. in OCLC], as well as his most famous, Ned Buntline)
Monaghan, Jay. The great rascal : the life and adventures of Ned Buntline, 1952: page 34, etc. (A statement by Ned's father in 1838 indicates that 1821 was Ned's birth year. Ned himself believed all his life that he was born later, giving, at various times, 1822, 1823, or 1825 as his birth year. The famous pseudonym, Ned said, began with an early literary effort, a story titled the Captain's Pig, wherein he signed himself Ned Buntline, a buntline being the rope at the bottom of a square sail)
