Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 595 (Ephraim McDowell, physician and surgeon. Family moved to Danville, Ky. where he attended school in Georgetown and Bardstown, and studied medicine under Dr. Alexander Humphreys of Staunton, Virginia. Attended a course of lectures at the University of Edinburgh School of Medicine. Returned to Danville in 1795 where he set up a busy practice and surgery. Performed the first ovariotomy on 47-year-old Jane Crawford on Christmas Day 1809. Repeated the surgery at least eleven additional times. Was one of the founders of Centre College and served as a trustee of the college between 1819 and 1829.)
