Family moved to Danville, Ky. where he attended school in Georgetown and Bardstown, and studied medicine under Dr. Alexander Humphreys of Staunton, Virginia. Attended a course of lectures at the University of Edinburgh School of Medicine. Returned to Danville in 1795 where he set up a busy practice and surgery. Performed the first ovariotomy on 47-year-old Jane Crawford on Christmas Day 1809. Repeated the surgery at least eleven additional times. Was one of the founders of Centre College and served as a trustee of the college between 1819 and 1829.)
