Oxford dictionary of national biography, 26 September 2016 (Merret (or Merrett), Christopher (1614-1695), physician and writer on natural philosophy; born Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, 16 February 1614; entered Oxford University 1631; BA, Oriel College, January 1635; he studied medicine, Gloucester Hall, DM January 1643; settled in practice in London about 1640, admitted to fellowship of the College of Physicians in 1651; in 1664, keepership of the College's new library and museum; later compiled the first catalogue, which was printed in 1660; served seven times as the College's censor; rent-free accommodation in the college house in Amen Corner [in the City of London]; November 1660, a founder member of the Royal Society; quickly became a very active member, serving on the council, contributing several papers to the Philosophical Transactions; works on applied natural philosophy, winemaking, glassmaking; empiricism; for Pinax rerum naturalium Britannicarum, a new catalogue of the British fauna, flora, and fossils (first impression 1666), his interest and knowledge was mainly in geology; the near-destruction of the library and museum in the Great Fire [of London in 1666] led to the abolition of his post; deprived of his fellowship in the College of Physicians in September 1681; four years later the Royal Society expelled him, too; lived last years in a house in Hatton Garden [Holborn], dying there on 19 August 1695; buried in St Andrew's Church, Holborn; a genus of unicellular algae was named Merrettia by S.F. Gray many years later in his honour)
