Ukr. rad. ent︠s︡ykl.; v. 4, p. 554 (Kaniv, city in Cherkasʹka oblastʹ; 1st mentioned in 1144. Around 1362 it was seized by Lithuania. In 1569 it was ceded to Poland. From 1793, as part of Right Bank Ukraine it was reunited with Russia. Soviet power was established there in 1918)
Rad. ent︠s︡ykl. istorii Ukraïny: v. 2, p. 303 (Kaniv; city in Cherkasʹka oblastʹ. 1st mentioned in 1147. Kaniv was seized by Lithuania ca. 1362, then came under Polish rule which lasted until 1793 when it was reunited with Russia. From 1796-1797 Kaniv was part of the Kyïvsʹke namistnyt︠s︡tvo . From 1797 to 1837 it was part of the Kyïvsʹka hubernii︠a︡. Between 1918-1919 Kaniv was successively occupied by Soviet, then Austro-Hungarian, then Denikin's White Army troops until retaken by Soviet forces. From 1923-1925 it was the center of Kyïvsʹka hubernii︠a︡; then part of the newly organized Cherkasʹkyĭ okruh from 1925 to 1930. From 1932 to 1954 Kaniv was transferred to the Kyïvsʹka oblastʹ; and finally from 1954- it has been part of the Cherkasʹka oblastʹ)
