African American National Biography, accessed January 17, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Cheatham, Doc; Aldophus Cheatham; trumpeter, bandleader, jazz musician; born 13 June 1905 in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. He played tenor saxophone in Nashville's Bijou Theater (1920s) and with Chick Webb's orchestra, New York City (1928), as well as with McKinney's Cotton Pickers (1930s). He was a member of the Cab Calloway orchestra (1931-1939). For atime he worked at the U.S. post officein Long Island, NY (1944-1946). He also played with the Eddie Heywood Sextet (1952), and was lead trumpeter in Benny Goodman sextet (1966-1967). He was a jazz musician at Sweet Basil's in New York (1980-1997). He died 02 June 1997 in Washington, District of Columbia, United States)
