Moved to Houston with her family when she was a child. Enrolled in Dillard University in New Orleans, graduating in 1967, then was accepted into Harvard University, earning a MA in 1971 and a Ph.D. in 1973. Began her teaching career at the University of New Orleans, then taught 1977 to 1979 at California State University Northridge in Los Angeles, then as associate dean of graduate studies at the University of Southern California. Moved in 1983 to Princeton University, eventually becoming vice-provost there. In 1995 she became president of Smith College, and in 2000, president of Brown University, the first African American to lead an Ivy League school.)
