Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: pages 123-124 ("Benjamin Helm Bristow" lawyer, railroad entrepreneur and national political figure. Born June 20, 1832 in Elkton, Ky. Attended Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania and was admitted to the bar in 1854. Served in the Civil War. Elected to the Kentucky Senate in 1863 as a Republican. Became president of the California and Texas Railway Construction Company in 1872 then secretary of the Treasury in 1874. Moved to New York City where he co-founded the American Bar Association. Died in New York on June 22, 1896.)
