Biography/History noteLouis-Philippe-Albert d'Orléans, comte de Paris, would have become King of France if his grandfather, King Louis-Philippe, had not been forced from the throne in the revolution of 1848. The Comte de Paris went into exile in England during the revolution, and then served as a volunteer on General George McClellan's staff in 1861-1862. When the French republican government passed a law in 1886 expelling the heads of all formerly sovereign houses from France, the Comte de Paris retired again to England, where he died in 1894. During his years in England he published several books, including an eight-volume history of the Civil War.
