Ukr. rad. ent︠s︡ykl.: v. 7, p. 362 (Niz︠h︡yn; town in Chernihivsʹka oblastʹ. 1st mentioned in chronicles of 1147 as Unenez︠h︡ [no publs. in LC data base]. From the middle of the 14th cent. it was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Since 1514 it has been called Niz︠h︡yn. From 1618 the city was part of Poland until B. Khmelʹnyt︠s︡ʹkyĭ liberated the town in 1648. From 1648 until 1782 Niz︠h︡yn served as a military town of the Niz︠h︡ynsʹkyĭ polk. In 1667 Nyz︠h︡yn was ceded to Russia. Soviet authority was established there in 1917. In 1918 the town was occupied by troops of Austria-Hungary provoking a revolt by the townspeople)

Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 3, p. 602 (Nizhen or Nizhyn; a city and raion center in Chernihiv oblast. 1st mentioned as Unenezh or Unenizh [no publs. in LC data base] in the Hypatian Chronicles of 1147. Tatars destroyed the town in 1239 and it recovered slowly. In mid 14th cent. it came under Lithuanian rule and in 1514 it was renamed Nizhen. In 1618 Nizhen was siezed by Poland, and in 1625 it was granted Magdeburg law. In Hetmanate Ukraine it was a regiment center of the Nizhen Regiment (1648-1782) and then a county center of Chernihiv vicegerency and Chernihiv gubernia (1802-1917). In 1667 Nizhen was granted to Russia)
