Du Pont; used "Frank" with intimates; unusual among his family in capitalizing the ""D" in Du Pont; b. Sept. 27, 1803 at Bergen Point, N.J., now part of the City of Bayonne; d. June 23, 1865 at Philadelphia; son of Victor du Pont and Josephine du Pont; naval officer; joined as midshipman, 1815; lieutenant, 1826; lieutenant commander, 1842; captain, 1855; rear admiral, 1862; commander, Philadelphia Navy Yard, 1860-61; commander, South Atlantic blockading squadron, 1861-63; relieved, July 6, 1863; Du Pont spent his active life in naval commands, primarily at sea, including service in the Mexican War (command of the U.S.S. Cyane in the California theater) and the Civil War, and commanding the U.S.S. Minnesota on an around-the-workd cruise in 1857-1859; his residence on land was Louviers, a country house in Brandywine Hundred near Wilmington, Del.)
