Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience, Second Edition, accessed April 6, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Jugnauth, Anerood; prime minister; born 1930 in Palma, Mauritius; began his political career shortly after completing legal studies in Great Britainl running as a candidate for the Independent Forward Block (IFB), he won a seat in the legislative assembly during the 1963 general elections; in 1966 attended the Constitutional Conference in London and shortly thereafter was appointed minister of state for development; in 1967 was appointed minister of labor; in 1971 reentered politics as a member of the newly formed Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM), rising in the ranks to become party president in 1974; won a seat in parliament in 1976, and became leader of the opposition; was forced to leave the MMM and subsequently formed a new political party, the Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM); in the 1983 elections, MSM party allied with two others to push the MMM from power and he won the 1987 elections; in September 2000, a MSM-MMM coalition swept legislative elections, and he became prime minister once again; was re-elected in September 2008)
