African American National Biography, accessed June 9, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Bennett, Louise; fiction writer, television actor, radio / television personality, comedian; born 07 September, 1919 in Kingston, Jamaica; educated at St. Simon's College (1933-1936) and Excelsior High School (1936-1938); studied journalism (1930s); published books of poetry (1940-1944); received a British Council scholarship, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, England (1945); worked at BBC in weekly variety show Caribbean Carnival (1945-1946), later show West Indian Guest Night (1950-1953); moved to the United States (1953); performed at St. Martin's Little Theater, in Harlem; sang folk songs in Village Vanguard, Greenwich Village; directed folk musical Day, Jamaica; was drama officer (1955-1959), and director (1959-1963) of Jamaica Social Welfare Commission; studied Jamaican myth and folklore; produced several recordings (1954-1958); taught drama and Jamaican folklore at the University of the West Indies, Kingston (1955-1969); performed on radio, television, and the stage (1963); hosted weekly children's television show Ring Ding (1970-1982); published poetry and stories; died 26 July, 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
