Bristowe challenged Anna's and Margaret's versions, offering for the first time in print a darker version of Anna's biography. In his chapter "The True Story of Anna Leonowens," using East India Company records, Bristowe pointed out that Anna was born in India (not Wales), on November 26, 1831 (not 1834), the second child of a poor private named Edwards (not a major named Crawford), who died three months before she was born. Her death on Jan. 19, 1915. Anna was 83 years old)
