D. in philology from the University of Leipzig in 1884; from 1886-1888 Elster worked as a lecturer at the University of Glasgow; he was a lecturer in German Literature and Language at the Faculty of Arts in Leipzig from 1888-1892; from1892-1895 he was associate Professor of German Language and Literature in Leipzig; from 1895-1903 he was associate Professor of Modern German Language and Literature at the University of Marburg; from 1904-1928 he was Professor of Modern German language and literature at the University of Marburg; in 1914, immediately before the First World War, he was a visiting professor at Cornell University in Ithaca)
