Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 2, p. 375 (Izmail; city and raion center of Odessa oblast; an important commercial port. Originally called Smil [no publs. ic LC data base], from 1484 to 1812 and from 1856 to 1877 it belonged to the Turks, who fortified the town and built a large citadel there. Cossack forces attacked it several times during the early 17th cent. and pillaged it in 1632. In 1770, 1790, and 1809 it was captured by Russian forces. From 1812 to 1856 and from 1877 to 1917 Izmail belonged to Russia and was a country town in Bessarabia. From 1918 until 1940 and from 1941 to 1944 Ismail belonged to Rumania)
Ukr. rad. ent︠s︡ykl.: v. 4, p. 342 (Izmaïl, city in Odesʹka oblastʹ. At the end of the 15th cent. the existing settlement of Smil [no publs. in LC data base] was seized by the Turks. Attacked by Russian forces three times from 1770 to 1809 it was granted to Russia by the Peace treaty of 1812, and by the treaty of 1856 it became part of the Moldavsʹke kni︠a︡zivstvo. Soviet power was established in Izmaïl on 11-11-1917. In Feb. 1918 as part of Bessarabia Izmaïl was seized by Romania. In 1940 it became a part of Ukraine)
