He attended Cooper Union for two years but did not earn a degree. By the time he was twenty, he had amassed a mineral collection of over 4,000 specimens that he meticulously labeled and sold to the University of Minnesota for $400. When he was twenty-three, he became the gem expert at Tiffany and Company, where he remained for fifty-three years, eventually becoming Vice President. From 1883-1909, he was special agent for the United States Geological Survey. He founded the New York Mineralogial Club and was a member of the American Society of Arts and Science and the Philadelphia Academy of Sciences. He was Honorary Curator of Precious Stones at the American Museum of Natural History and Curator for the New York Academy of Sciences. He wrote over 500 articles and several books, some of which are still in print today)
