Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 319 (Albert Fink, bridge designer and railroad executive, born October 27, 1827 in Lauterbach, Germany. Graduated in 1848 from the Polytechnic School of Darmstadt where he studied architecture and engineering. Immigrated to the United States in 1849 and became a draftsman for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. By 1852 his bridge truss design was being used by the B&O. In 1857 he was recruited by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Oversaw iron bridge construction and design over several Ky. rivers, including one at Munfordville and the first one over the Ohio River at Louisville. Also completed the Jefferson County, Ky. courthouse. After the outbreak of the Civil War he and his engineering corps repaired damage to the L&N lines by the Confederate army. Became vice president of L&N in 1871. Retired in 1889. Lived in Louisville and New York City. Died April 3, 1897 in Louisville.)
