Dictionary of African Biography, accessed January 22, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Freeman, Thomas Birch; Wesleyan Methodist clergy, missionary, traveler, antislavery activist; born 06 December 1809 in Hempshire, England; missionary sponsored by the Wesleyan Missionary Society (WMS) (1837-1856); led expedition to the Asante capital of Kumasi with goal of converting Asante kingdom locals to Christianity (1839); documented experience in Asante in Journal of a Visit to Ashanti (1840); moved to Nigerian port town of Badagry where Ghezo, powerful king of Dahomey, consented to a Methodist mission in city of Ouidah (1842); struggled to expand Methodist missions in Ghana and Nigeria (1843-1854); ran farming enterprise and sent botanical specimens to Kew Gardens, trying to settle disputes between British, Fante, and Dutch administration in Elmina (1860's-1870's); returned to ministry and renewed evangelization among Fante communities (1873); lauded in later years as pioneer; died 12 August 1890)
