The name, which is that of a small Indian band, means stone, and relates to the rocky course of the Columbia River through Cathlamet Channel. James Birnie, once an employee of Hudson's Bay Company, operated a trading post there in the 1860s. Alternate names once used include Birnie's Retreat and Birnie's Trading Post.
