Earned an A.B. from Illinois College in Jacksonville (1937) and an LL.B. from Washington University in St. Louis (1940). Worked as an assistant attorney for the Chicago & Illinois Midland Railway Company, and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II, rising to the rank of lieutenant. Moved to and began a law practice in Alton, Illinois. Elected to the Illinois House of Representatives as a Republican in 1954, where he served eight consecutive terms. Resigned September 1969 from the House when he was appointed to the U.S. Senate from Illinois where he served until 1970. Died in Alton on August 3, 1972.) |
