Wikipedia, Jan. 28, 2014: "Helius Eobanus Hessus" (Helius Eobanus Hessus; family name said to be Koch, Eoban the name of a local saint, Hessus indicates the land of his birth, Helius the fact that he was born on Sunday; born Jan. 6, 1488 in Halgehausen in Hesse-Kassel; died Oct. 5, 1540 in Marburg; a German Latin poet; visted a Latin school in Frankenberg, Hesse; entered U. Erfurt in 1504, and appointed rector of the school of St. Severus soon after graduation; quickly lost the post and spent 1509-1513 at the court of the bishop of Riesenburg; returning to Erfurt, reduced to great straits by drunken and irregular habits; appointed 1517 professor of Latin in the university, prominently associated with the distinguished men of his time and took part in the political, religious and literary quarrels of the period, finally declaring himself in favor of Luther and the reformation; U. Erfurt greatly weakened by the popularity of U. Wittenberg, and H. endeavored unsuccessfully to gain a living by practicing medicine; by the influence of Camerarius and Melanchthon, obtained a post at Nuremberg 1526, but returned to Erfurt in 1533, finding it not to be as before; gained the favor of the landgrave of Hesse in 1536 and appointed as professor of poetry and history U. German Wikipedia, Jan. 28, 2014: "Helius Eobanus Hessus" (Helius Eobanus Hessus; born Jan. 6, 1488 in Halgehausen, died Oct. 4, 1540 in Marburg; evangelical (Lutheran) humanist and considered one of the greatest neo-Latin poets of his time; original name probably Eoban Koch, later changing his family name to Hessus and adding Helius as an allusion to his being born on Sunday and to the god of poetry; inscribed himself 1504 in the matriculation register of U. Erfurt as Eobanus coci Francobergius, having attended a Latin school in Franckenberg an der Eder, as well as at the Haina monastery and in Gemünden an der Wohra; 1507 obtained the rectorship of the St. Severus school; 1509 relinguished this post and went to Riesenburg, working as a chancery officer and occasional poet of the bishop, Hiob von Dobeneck; 1513 started to study law at U. Frankfurt /Oder, and soon went to Leipzig, again taking up humanistic studies; August 1514 returned to Erfurt, becoming professor of Latin, and participating in the Erfurt humanistic circle, working on the Letters of obscure men; from 1526 teacher of rhetoric and poetry at the Aegidianum in Nuremberg; from 1536 professor in Marburg)
