Sent to St. Louis University, the U.S. Naval Academy and Notre Dame University, though he never graduated from any of these institutions. After his father's death when he was twenty-two, he led his father's businesses and was active in Republican politics. Named territorial governor in 1898 where he served two terms (until January 1907) and supported separate statehood for New Mexico and Arizona. Switched his allegiance to the Democratic Party when he stepped down as governor. Died at age eighty-four.)
