Rad. ent︠s︡ykl. istoriï Ukraïny: v. 3, p. 245 (Novhorod-Siversʹkyĭ; city in Chernihivsʹka oblastʹ, first mentioned in chronicles of 1066. Was one of the udel centers of Kievan Rus. In 1356 it was siezed by Lithuania. After the Russian-Lithuanian War of 1500-1503 Novhorod-Siversʹkyĭ was given to Russia. By terms of the peace treaty of 1618 the city was ceded to Poland. In 1654 as part of Left-Bank Ukraine it was reunited with the Russian Empire. During 1782-1796 Novhorod-Siversʹkyĭ was the center of the Novhorod-Siversʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo. In 1797 it was transferred to the Malorosiĭsʹka hubernii︠a︡ where it remained until 1802 when it was again transferred to the Chernihivsʹka hubernii︠a︡. On 04-07-1918 Novhorod-Siversʹkyĭ was siezed by Austro-Hungarian troops but was liberated on 12-09-1918 by soldiers of the 1st Ukr. Sov. Division. From 1923 Novhorod-Siversʹkyĭ was the center of the Novhorod-Siversʹkyĭ okruh until 1925 when it became part of the Hlukhivsʹkyĭ okruh. Since 1932 it has been part of the Chernihivsʹka oblastʹ)
