Kievan Rus' had disintegrated into 13 separate principalities after the death of Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Kiev in 1054, including the principalities of Galicia and Volhynia. After the death of Roman Mstyslavych wars and rebellions lasted from 1238 to 1245, when Roman's son Danylo Romanovych was able to reunite Volhynia and Galicia. After the Mongol invasion of Rus' in 1239-1941 Danylo was forced to pledge allegiance to Khan Batu of the Golden Horde in 1246. After Danylo's death in 1264 his son Lev I Danylovych made Lviv the new capital in 1272 where he ruled until his death in 1301. After 1301 Lev's son and grandsons ruled the principality until 1340 when the last prince Yurii II Boleslav (1323-1340) was poisoned by the boyars.
