Born near Louisa, Ky. on January 22, 1890. Attended Kentucky Normal School in Louisa, graduated from Centre College law school in 1911, and was admitted to the bar in the same year. Elected commonwealth's attorney in 1921 on the Democratic ticket to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1923, serving from January 12, 1924 to March 3, 1929 and again from March 4, 1931 to May 12, 1938. In 1937 President Roosevelt appointed Vinson a judge on the U.S. circuit court for the District of Columbia and in June 1945 President Truman appointed him secretary of the Treasury where he served from July 23, 1945 to June 23, 1946.
