New York times, 1 May 2023: in an obituary on page A16 (Elisabeth Kopp; born Elisabeth Ikle on Dec. 16, 1936 in Zurich [Switzerland], died on Apr. 7 [2023] in Zumikon [Switzerland], aged 86; first woman on council governing Switzerland; in 1984 Kopp overcame accusations involving her husband to become the first woman elected to Switzerland's governing Federal Council -- but a few years later she could not overcome another scandal involving her husband. She resigned when she had seemed likely to be the country's first female president; Mrs. Kopp was one of the more left-leaning members of the conservative Radical Democratic Party, known for her work on environmental issues as well as for advancing women's causes; her election was an important moment in the push for women's equality in Switzerland, a country that had lagged behind most of Europe in that area)
