Biography/History noteEnrico da Susa, commonly known as Henricus de Segusio, was born in Susa circa 1200. One of the most revered canon lawyers of the Middle Ages, he studied law at Bologna under Iacopo di Balduino (died 1235). He later lectured in Paris in 1239, where he was made an archdeacon around 1240. Between 1236 and 1242 he made several trips to England serving both Henry III and the papacy. He returned to France and became bishop of Sisteron in 1243/1244, and was later promoted to Archbishop of Embrun in 1250. While Archbishop of Embrun, he composed his most famous work, the Summa super titulis Decretalium, also known as the Summa Hostiensis. In 1259, he was named papal legate to Lombardy, and was made Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and Velletri in 1262, whence he earned the nickname Hostiensis. He died in Viterbo in 1271.
