Wikipedia, viewed October 23, 2019 (Emil Seidel was born on December 13, 1864 in Ashland Pennsylvania. He attended public school until age 13, when he dropped out to become a woodcarver. He studied wood carving in Berlin for six years. During this time he became an active socialist. When he returned to the United States, he joined the Socialist Labor Party of America. In 1904, he was elected alderman in the city of Milwaukee. In 1910, Seidel was elected mayor of Milwaukee, becoming the first socialist mayor in the United States. His bid for re-election for mayor failed in 1912 but did run as the Socialist Party's nominee for Vice President of the United States on the ticket with Eugene V. Debs. In 1914, he again ran for mayor but was defeated. He then returned to the city council as an alderman. He retired from public office in 1936. Seidel died in Milwaukee on June 24,1947.)
