Göttingen, where he came into contact with the ideas of the French Revolution; after an educational trip to London and revolutionary Paris, S. began teaching in Berne in 1791 and named professor of philology the following year; named 1798 by the new Swiss Republic as minister of sciences, arts, buildings and roads; Swiss ambassador to France 1800-1802, and 1803 responsible for the creation of the canton of Aargau, and president of the commission responsible for the liquidation of the Swiss Republic; 1803 settled in Paris, the home of his wife, and devoted himself to writing, translating, oratory and theological studies)
