Was a faculty member at Vanderbilt Law School, then appointed assistant attorney general 1903-1907, then attorney general 1913-1914. A Democrat, he wrote 503 majority opinions and 310 dissents as a Supreme Court Justice from 1914-1941. Retired February 1, 1941, after which he adopted 33 children who were war refugees from Europe. Died in Washington, D.C. on August 24, 1946) |
