Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 396 ("James Guthrie" was born December 5, 1792 in Nelson County, Kentucky; lived in New Orleans; admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1817. Appointed Commonwealth's attorney in 1820, he moved to Louisville then served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1827 to 1830. Served in the Kentucky Senate 1831-1840 then appointed by President Pierce to be Secretary of the Treasury 1853-1857. Served as vice president of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, then president from 1860 to 1868. Served in the U. S. Senate from March 4, 1865 to February 7, 1868. He died in Louisville March 13, 1869.)
