Bolʹsh. sov. ėntsikl., 3rd ed: v. 19, p. 513 (Pechory, a city and the center of Pechorskiĭ raĭon. It arose in the 16th cent. as a settlement attached to the Pskovo-Pecherskiĭ monastyrʹ and together with the monstery served as an important strategic point on the western border of Russia. From the end of the 18th cent. Pechory was a city in the Pskovskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡ and then the Pskovskiĭ uezd. From 1920 to 1940 it was part of Estonia. From 1941 to 1944 Pechory was occupied by the Nazis. From 1945 Pechory has been part of the Pskovskai︠a︡ oblastʹ)
