Until 1497 the town was named Kni︠a︡z︠h︡a Luka [no publs. in LC data base]. From 1497 to 1579 it was called Karacheva Pustyni︠a︡ [no publs. in LC data base]. From 1579 it was named Sharhorod and was part of Poland. After the 1793 partition of Poland Sharhorod became a part of the Right Bank Ukraine and as such was reunited with Russia. Soviet power was established there in Jan. 1918)

Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 4, p. 618 (Sharhorod; town and raion center in Vinnytsia oblast. In 1383 Grand Duke Vytautas granted the site to his servant V. Karachevsky, who established the settlement of Kniazhna Luka. In 1497 it was renamed Karacheva Pustynia. In 1579 J. Zamoyski renamed it Sharhorod and built a fortress there. During B. Khmelnytsky's uprising Sharhorod was captured by M. Kryvonis and assigned to the Bratslav Regiment. In 1667 it was ceded to Poland. Between 1672-1699 the town was occupied by the Turks, who called it Küc̜ük Stambul (Little Stambul) [no publs. in LC data base]. After the partition of Poland in 1793 Sharhorod was transferred to Russia and became part of Mohyliv county in Podilia gubernia)
