He attained both a doctoral degree in philosophy and in law. In 1996 Hilgendorf habilitated in the fields of criminal law, criminal procedure, and legal philosophy with the publication On the Distinction between Statements of Fact and Statements of Value in Criminal Law (translation). He had been professor at and Dean of the Law Faculty at the Universität Konstanz before moving in 2001 to the Universität Würzburg. From 2010 to 2012 he has served as the Dean of the Law Faculty there.
